The Starlight Throw blends star stitches, puff stitches, and simple double crochet repeats to create a cozy, modern texture. Designed to be soothing to work without constant counting, it’s the perfect blanket to sink into at the end of a long day.

The Starlight Throw was designed to be the perfect cozy project. The textural combination of stitches is soothing to work up, making the project something you look forward to sinking into at the end of a long day. I wanted something relaxing to crochet without constant counting, but still interesting enough to feel engaging, so I combined star stitches, puff stitches, and simple double crochet rows to create a balanced, yet interesting, texture. Ch 1 does NOT count as a stitch

When working the border, work 3 hdc into the row ends of the star stitch section and 2 hdc into the row ends of the dc/puff stitch section, keeping them evenly spaced.

In the border section of the pattern, you’ll have the option to create a border with space to add tassels, or a solid border without the tassels.

Special Stitches
Foundation Single Crochet
Ch 2, insert hook into second ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), *YO, pull through one loop (this forms the chain), YO, pull through both loops on hook (this completes the first single crochet), insert hook into the chain, YO, pull up a loop**; repeat from * to ** until you have the desired number of stitches.
Puff Stitch (ps)
Always worked on the wrong side of your work. All loops will be worked into the same stitch.
[Insert hook into indicated st, YO, pull up a long loop] 4 times (8 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops on hook, ch 1 to close stitch.
Star Stitch
This stitch consists of two rows.
Row 1
First Start Stitch: Ch 3, insert hook into second ch from hook, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook into next ch, YO, pull up a loop, [Insert hook into next st, YO, pull up a loop] 3 times (6 loops on hook), YO, pull through all 6 loops, ch 1 to close stitch — this creates the “eye.”
Remaining Star Stitches
Insert hook into eye of the previous star stitch, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook between the left legs of previous star stitch, YO, pull up a loop, insert hook into same base stitch as previous star stitch, YO, pull up a loop, [insert hook into next st, YO, pull up a loop] twice. (6 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops on hook, ch 1 to close stitch.
Star stitches will repeat across until one st remains, hdc in the last st, turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, hdc into first st, 2 hdc in each eye across to last st, hdc in last st.

Gauge swatch instructions include working one complete repeat of the stitch pattern as follows:
Row 1: With 6.0 mm hook, Foundation Single Crochet (see Special Stitches) 26. (26 sts)
Alternatively, ch 27, sc into second ch from hook and into each ch across. (26 sts)
Row 2: Star Stitch across (see Special Stitches), turn. (12 Star Stitches)
Row 3: ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), hdc into first st, 2 hdc into each eye across to last st, hdc in last st, turn. (26 sts)
Rows 4–11: Rep Rows 2–3
Row 12: With 4.5 mm hook, ch 1, sc into each st across, turn. (26 sts)

Fasten off. Do not block your swatch.
Star Stitch Section:
7 star stitches by 4 star rows = 4 inches (10cm) square using US J/10 (6.0 mm) hook, unblocked.
Double Crochet + Puff Stitch Section:
9 dc by 6 rows = 3 inches (8cm) square using US 7 (4.5 mm) for double crochet rows and US J/10 (6.0 mm) for puff stitch rows, unblocked.
Pattern
Foundation Row: (WS) With 6 mm hook, Foundation Single Crochet 180, turn. (180 sts)
Alternatively, ch 181, sc into second ch from hook and into each ch across, turn. (180 sts)
Row 2: (RS) Star Stitch across, turn. (88 Star Stitches)
Row 3: ch 1, hdc into first st, 2 hdc into each eye across to last st, hdc into last st, turn. (180 sts)
Rows 4–11: Rep Rows 2–3
Row 12: With 4.5 mm hook, ch 1, sc into each st across, turn. (180 sts)
Rows 13–14: ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), dc into each st across, turn. (180 sts)
Row 15: With 6 mm hook, ch 1, hdc into first st, ps (see Special Stitches) into next st, *ch 2, sk next 2 sts, ps into next st**; Rep from * to ** across to last st, hdc into last st, turn. (60 ps)
Row 16: With 4.5 mm hook, ch 3, dc into the top of next ps, *2 dc into next ch-2 sp, dc into top of ps**; Rep from * to ** to last st, dc in last st, turn. (180 sts)
Row 17: ch 3, dc into each st across. (180 sts)
Rep rows 2–17 six more times for a total of 113 rows. Rep rows 2–11 once more for a total of 123 rows. You should have eight star stitch sections and seven puff stitch rows.
Border with No Tassels
With 4.5 mm hook, ch 1, *hdc into each st across to last st, 4 hdc into last st; working into row ends: 139 hdc (see Pattern Notes) to last row end, 4 hdc into last row end**; working into foundation ch: Rep from * to ** once more, sl st to first st to join (650 total border sts)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Border with Tassels
With 4.5 mm hook, ch 1, hdc 2, ch 1, sk next st, *[hdc 4, ch 1, sk next st] 35 times to last 2 sts, hdc into next st, 4 hdc into last st; working into row ends: 139 hdc (see Pattern Notes) to last row end, 4 hdc into last row end**; working into foundation ch: Rep from * to ** once more, sl st to first st to join. (650 total border sts)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Adding Tassels:
Wrap yarn 5-8 times around the short side of a book or piece of cardboard approximately 6 inches (15 cm) wide. Cut along one edge. Repeat until you have 72 bundles of 5-8 strands of yarn each.
Fold the strands of yarn in half, insert your hook under the ch-1 sp, pull the yarn strand loop under the ch-1 sp, yarn over with the tail ends and pull them through the loop, then pull tight to secure. Repeat for all ch-1 sps. Trim tassels so they are even.
