Frost & Linen Afghan
Sophisticated style made simple.
Master beautiful stitch definition with this meditative, rhythmic pattern. It's perfect for your next weekend project, whether you're a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking to try new stitch techniques!
An electric glacier blue and warm cream come together in the Frost & Linen Afghan, a textured patchwork blanket inspired by contrast in both color and stitch. I've paired the dimensional berry and alpine squares with softer moss and suzette textures for balance.
Worked one square at a time and seamed into a simple color-blocked layout, this project invites a steady, meditative rhythm while offering gentle variety to keep your hands engaged. The alternating palette gives the finished afghan a calm, modern feel that’s equally at home draped over a sofa, folded at the foot of a bed, or wrapped around you on a peaceful morning.

About the Pattern
The pattern is written in US crochet terms and worked by creating 10x10 inch squares using various stitches, then seamed together. The pattern guides you through making a throw-sized blanket (50 x 60 inches), however it is easy to adapt to make any size you prefer, simply by adding additional squares to the length or width.
There are four stitches of various textures, but one reason blankets are so fun to crochet is that they are easily customizable. Feel free to omit a stitch type, or add your own favorite, ensuring your squares are all 10x10 inches and you have a total of 30 squares for a throw size afghan. Additionally, get wild with your own color combinations, or go solid with your one favorite color.
If you do intend to make changes, make sure you read through the whole pattern first so you can prepare your own afghan layout diagram to ensure your textures and colors are alternating the way you like.
Materials
For the Frost & Linen Afghan I used Loops & Threads Impeccable Acrylic yarn in the shades "Glacier" and "Aran". This acrylic worsted weight is easy to work with, affordable, machine washable, and allows the stitch definition in this pattern pop. If you’d like to customize, you can substitute with any medium (4) worsted weight yarn.
Yarn: Loops & Threads Impeccable Acrylic
-
Glacier: 6 skeins (1,710 yards). Approximately 114 yards per square
-
Aran: 5 skeins (1,425 yards). Approximately 95 yards per square)
Note: the estimated yardage is based on the following quantities by color:
-
Nine 10'x10" squares in the Alpine stitch pattern in Glacier
-
Six 10'x10" squares in the Berry stitch pattern in Glacier
-
Nine 10'x10" squares in the Suzette stitch pattern in Aran
-
Six 10'x10" squares in the Moss stitch pattern in Aran
If you intend to alter the pattern, stitch types, or colors used, consider the total yardage you'll need based on this information as some stitch types require more yarn for the same 10"x10" block than others.
Hook: US J/10 (6.0 mm) and US 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook
(adjust as needed to meet gauge)
Notions:
-
Yarn needle (for seams and weaving in ends)
-
Stitch markers, scissors, and measuring tape as necessary

Joining

Here I have a diagram that outlines the order in which you will seam together the squares, alternating colors and textures.
If you are alternating the pattern for size, color, or stitch types, you'll need to draw up your own diagram to know how many squares of each color and stitch you'll need, and prepare for the seaming stage.
To join we'll be using the Mattress Stitch. This is an invisible seaming technique used to join the pieces edge-to-edge so that the join disappears into the fabric.
I recommend joining in rows first. For example, first join a suzette square to an alpine square (bottom row), then with the same joining yarn, bring in the berry and moss squares. Continue working in rows, then join in the vertical rows.
Seam in all the tails and you're done!
